The word actually means "thing to wear." There are subtle variations on the simple design in the sleeve and collar, and, although each is handmade to fit one person, they do not differ much in size (they are folded and belted at the waist). The shape is intended to conceal the beauty of the female form; rather, it gives clues about individual personality through color and motif choice, allows flirting with a long sleeve and reveals just enough dramatic detail at a sleeve opening, hem or neckline to accentuate certain features. This garment exemplifies traditional Japanese culture--subtle symbolism, concealed beauty and simple design.
